Music Videos

A music video is a short film or video that accompanies a piece of music or a song.
There are 3 different types of music videos; narrative based, concept based and performance based.

A narrative based video, centres around a story, whereas a performance based video is the artists being recorded performing their music and a concept based video is where the video doesn't necessarily link to the song but explains its own concept.

An example of a narrative based video is Katy Perry - Thinking of you
It explains the story between a woman who has lost her husband in war and has now got a new husband. The video shows Perry lipsynching which is common within most music videos. Although the lyrics do not not directly explain the events within the video, the video compliments the tone and thoughts of the song. The realistic setting almost makes into a short romantic film. The way the video uses flashbacks continue to present the video as a film and emphasis the story that is being presented.

Falling in Love - Ironik ft Jessica Lowndes is interesting as it is a narrative ased video, telling the story of blossoming love between a young couple, on the night they meet. However there are performance based aspects too, as between the story lines there are times when they lipsynch and dance with nothing else going on. Wheras when the story is being explained they act natural and don't mime.

An example of a performance based video is Cheryl Cole - Fight For This Love
Cheryl Cole lip-synchs throughout the video. The audience is watching her dance, but there is no story within the video, it just shows her performing her song. The entertainment comes from her dance sequences and costume changes, rather than a storyline.

An example of a concept based video is Rihanna - Rudeboy
Although she is performing and lipsynching within the video, the video has a original, exotic concept based due to the colours, editing and effects. It has an original jungle theme to it which is shown through the animals, and her clothing which is bright and patterned. It also has retro feel to it which is presented through the use of patterns and bright colours.
